"Learning what it means to take risk and learning
that lesson through the eyes of artists"

Social Impact &
Expanding
My Perspective

“It is in your hands, to make a better world
for all who live in it.”

— Nelson Mandela

One of my ambitions when I left the corporate world was to re-balance my life with work, volunteering, social impact and play. In general, positive social impact goes hand-in-hand as an executive coaching because it generally means you want to help people to a greater degree, which helps more people.  I've alway been passionate about fighting for social injustice since my undergraduate days at the University Of Natal, and this unwavering passion also motivates me as a coach.

The social impact I deliver takes many forms:

  • Supporting non profit and educational organizations:

    • Vice chair of the North Carolina Innovation Council

    • Chairman and Board Member, McColl Art Center

  • Appellate Judge for the Town Planning Appeals Board in Natal Province, South Africa

  • Support my colleges (Clare and Wolfson)

  • Support Cambridge University in the USA

  • Delivering coaching/mentoring or training to emerging students at Duke University

  • Other social impact work that gives me a buzz and where I can make a difference

Learning What it Means to Take Risk and Learning That Lesson Through
the Eyes of Artists

While working at Wachovia I was a member of the board, and ultimately chairman, of the McColl Center for Art.  In the latter role I assisted the executive director of the Center in creating the Innovation Institute.  The Institute brought artists and business executives together to understand the spark of creativity within all of us. Hanging out with artists with different life experiences encouraged me to tackle challenges from different angles and truly changed how I progressed in my career.  I undertook the Innovation Institute course myself.  It took me well outside my comfort zone, but gave me the opportunity to work with people I rarely had an opportunity to know.

Artists remind us that obstacles become opportunities. Artists use their emotions, experience and business savvy to make create beautiful things--just as great innovators create pathbreaking businesses. For me, the experience was profound; it truly changed not only how I would progress in my career, but more importantly, how I would show up in the world..
