Level Up Your Leadership

I subscribe to the idea of five levels of leadership and the laws of leadership written by Jim Collins. Collins is the author of several best-selling business books, including Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…And Others Don’t.

In Good to Great, Collins and his research team studied over 1,400 businesses looking for what distinguished the great ones. The team found that the truly great businesses had a special type of leader at the helm with qualities that, on the surface, appear paradoxical. Modest but willful. Shy but fearless. Humble but determined. Also known as a sort of "X factor" these powerful, yet opposing qualities distinguishes exemplary leaders from merely effective and competent ones. Because they tend to hide in plain site so to speak— they aren't usually recognized until they bring success to their organization in the face disaster, when all seems lost, and when the future is uncertain. It is in these moments of extreme adversity, that these individuals begin to stand out and fight with every ounce of their being to help the company and the individuals they work with to success.

The second category of people—and I believe it to be the larger group of executives—includes those who have the potential to become a Level 5 leader. This capability exists within them, though it has to be understood, developed and drawn out. It is a quality, but it is also a learned behavior and one which can lead to executive presence, and exemplary leadership.

Every leader should aim to be a Level 5 exemplary leader, but the question is how. Firstly consider mentorship or coaching. As you look to further advance your career, it becomes increasingly essential to have support and guidance from others who have walked the same path. No matter what career stage you’re in, having a coach can help you make strides you couldn’t achieve otherwise and maximize your hidden talents.

Which stage have you reached? My best advice is to figure out where you are on this journey, and clarify your goals. It’s never too late to expand your skill set and level up as a leader to achieve more in your career. If you’re ready to take the next step, contact me to reach your desired level, so your company gains the leading edge.
